    Flooding

    Several areas in Western North Carolina were hit with heavy rains and mudslides overnight. Several communities were evacuated as dozens of roads were closed due to the mudslides and flooding. One mudslide in McDowell County swept away two state Department of Transportation workers.

    The National Weather Service also issued a flash flood warning for areas downstream of Lake Tahoma. Some areas received as much as 8 inches of rain over the past 24 hours. The National Weather Service reported some road closures. It’s expected that flooding will continue through Friday.

    Some of the roads have been closed due to downed trees and mudslides. The state Department of Transportation said it will be clearing the roads by midday Friday.

    The DOT reported that 40 roads in ten western North Carolina counties have been closed due to flooding. The state is sending engineers to the areas where there’s concern. They’ll also check the structural soundness of dams.

    The dam is owned by Buck Creek Inc. and is located about five miles northwest of Marion, North Carolina. It’s currently in a level one imminent failure condition. The engineers will continue to monitor the dam’s condition until daylight.

    A mandatory evacuation order was issued for areas below the Lake Tahoma Dam. A landslide near the dam may have compromised the dam’s integrity. In addition, the National Weather Service has issued a flash flood emergency for the town of Marion.
